Day of Pink

Mrs. Waters' new shirt!
Today was an important day across Manitoba- it was the Day of Pink! The Day of Pink is a bully awareness campaign where all students wear a pink shirt (or other clothing that is pink) to school to show that they are taking a stand against bullying. Our class was full of pink, and we were all sporting pink bracelets that we made with Mrs. Lockhart.  Before lunch, we all went to the gym as a school and performed the St. James - Assiniboia Safe Schools dance. It was great to see the sea of pink!

We had some fun in French class this afternoon once our hockey students returned! We played a great game of charades with our 'les sports' vocabulary words - les filles vs. les garcons!
'Je fais la natation!'
'Je monte le cheval!'
'Je fais de la boxe!'
'Je joue le soccer!'

(The girls won this round!)

Full Speed Ahead!

With less than three months left of school (not that we're counting!), Room 23 is putting the pedal to the metal! We still have lots of things to learn before we get released for the summer! Today we worked very hard on division in math and even did some group work about Canada's North in social studies. We're also having lots of fun exploring poetry! Stay tuned for some upcoming poems!

Frankie...

One of our buddies has left our class. Frankie moved to another school this week. We'll never forget him. He always had a big smile and knew just how to make Mrs. Waters laugh. Room 23 will not be the same without him...
We'll miss you Frankie! Good luck at your new school!

Talking Sticks

We had some visitors to Room 23 this morning! Many will remember Miss Banks; she used to teach at Heritage, but is now the vice-principal at Buchanan School. She joined us, along with Mrs. Stuart from Buchanan, to teach us about talking sticks. Talking sticks have been used traditionally in Indigenous (First Nations) communities as a way of ensuring all people were heard. The stick is passed around the circle to designate who had the right to speak, and everyone else listens with respect.  People who hold the stick have the right to say what is in his or her heart without fear of humiliation.  We watched two videos with Miss Banks and Mrs. Stuart, and then they were wonderful enough to bring supplies to help us make our own! We used wooden sticks, feathers, beads, twine, leather lacing, and markers. Everyone was very excited to create and each stick is unique!

We had a great time making our own sticks, and we will be using one in our future classroom discussions.

We're Published!

While almost everyone in the class was at hockey academy or science fair this afternoon, Raissa, Viv, Marisa, Luc, and Velorian, and Ashley decided to publish a story! We played around with 'StoryBird', which is a really fun website for creating stories. Check out our first creation called "The Lunch Date".
Mr. McFarlane, one of our wonderful Educational Assistants, is now famous!  :)

Farewell Brianna!

Tuesday meant saying 'good bye' to Brianna, who has been with our class since the beginning of the year. Brianna was a Student Teacher from the University of Winnipeg who spent two mornings a week in our classroom, learning how to be a teacher. She meant a lot to our class and she will be greatly missed!

This afternoon we had a visit with our buddies from Grade 1! Once a cycle we get together to practice our reading skills and play with technology. Lots of fun!

Every week we have a new 'Word of the Week', where we try to expand our vocabulary! This week's word is discombobulate! The class had tons of fun learning about that one!

Have a great evening! Go Jets Go!

Back At It!

Welcome back! (Although it seems like we never left!) We're STILL waiting for some spring weather to show up! -25 this morning?! Are you kidding me?!
Room 23 started some new units today. Math class has moved from multiplication to division. Our Social Studies focus is now on Canada's North. I am really excited for this one; our Arctic is a fascinating place! Our first lesson today included an impromptu discussion about the Inuit game/talent of throat singing! If you ever get a chance to watch throat singing, definitely do it (check it out on YouTube!) It's such a unique art!
Don't forget that we have early dismissal tomorrow. Also, notes came home today about spring photos, which will be on Monday, April 8th.
Have a great week!
