Land of the Spirits

Did you know that 'Manitoba' came from a Cree word- Manito-wapow? It means 'land of the spirits' or 'where the spirit lives'.  We enjoy learning different Indigenous words in our classroom, and so Mrs. Waters brought out a really neat map for us to look at.  It's a map of Manitoba, and all the different First Nations communities are on there, in their Indigenous names! We spent quite a bit of time looking at the map, and many of our classmates showed us where their families are from. The map even has a key to show us which Nations the communities are- Cree, Ojibway, Dakota, Oji-Cree, and Dene.
Our new favourite 'thing' in the classroom:
a map of Manitoba with the Indigenous names of First Nations communities!
We had a visitor from Sport Manitoba this afternoon.  She came to talk to us about the importance of bike safety! She showed us an interesting experiment about melons and helmets, and which ones protect the best.  We also talked about how we can now get tickets if we don't wear helmets- it's the law!

Mrs. Waters shared one of her favourite books with us at the end of the day.  'The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore' is a cool book about how books add excitement and colour to our world.  There's also a short film based on the book. Check it out below!
A GREAT book!
